The Baha'i Faith In Northamptonshire
I am collecting links to news articles with references to the Baha'i Faith. If you know of any others, please email them to me.
Want to know when this page is updated without having to keep checking back? It's easy with WatchThatPage. Just click the logo below!
To try and keep the news stories a little more up to date, I have now added a Weblog (or 'blog' for short). I hope to keep this updated with fresher stories as I find them, and these will not only be stories where the Baha'i Faith is mentioned directly, but also stories that may be of interest to both Bahai's and people who feel in harmony with the general principles of the Faith.
Why not check out the new blog now by clicking here?
In addition to ones I personally add, you can find a more regularly managed collection at Baha'i World News. This is the newly launched site for news stories about and featuring the Baha'i community, from all over the world.
These are some of the current headlines from Baha'i World News and Baha'i Index:
- A story about the Terraces in New York Times (free registration required).
- The Israel Postal service issued a stamp to commemorate the opening of the Terraces. Click here to see it.
- An Associated Press story about the Terraces.
- A lovely site about the inauguration of the Terraces on Mount Carmel, including some photos of the Arc and the Auxilliary Board Members.
- Fidelma Meehan, a member of the Swindon Baha'i community, will be speaking on "Wake Up To Wogan" at 9:15am on Thursday 29th March 2001, and for several Thursday's after that. Listen live on the BBC 2 website at www.bbc.co.uk/radio2
- March 21st 2001 - although this is a story from "across the pond", it is worth checking out as an example of how the faith is achieving more widespread recognition and reporting, even somewhere that is heavily Mormon - Salt Lake City, Utah. Click here for the frontpage story.
- A number of the members of our choir travelled down to Swindon on 1st March 2001 to help out with an interview for the BBC World Service. Fleur Bartlett, Richard Leigh and Kevin and Mina Beint were interviewed and recorded singing and praying at Swindon's feast, and the interview is being broadcast as part of the series "Patterns Of Faith". You can hear it at 13:45 on Friday 23rd March 2001 on MW 648 or log onto the BBC World Service website, and under Peoples and Beliefs you will find Patterns Of Faith.
- A very warm welcome to our newest Baha'is - Larraine Wilkinson (Finedon), Gay and Mike Butcher (Kettering) and Chrissy Jean-Baptiste (Milton Keynes)!
- One of our Baha'i choir members from Kettering, Alfred Sharpe, has been accepted to join the "Voices of Bahá" tour of Europe later this summer. This is a fantastic opportunity and we wish him the best of luck in his singing travels!
For more details on the choir's programme, please go to: http://members.home.net/tom.price/index.shtml.
- Alfred also gave a brief presentation on behalf of the multi-cultural centre at the recent Holocaust Memorial service in Wellingborough, on Saturday 27th February. For a picture, click here.
- Thanks to Russell Attwood for the following report:
"The memorial service to reflect on those suffering or perished in the recent earthquake in India was held in Kettering on Sunday 11th February. I believe that it was the first truly inter-Faith service ever held in Kettering. It was beautiful and moving to see such co-operation and participation from Hindus, Christians, Sikhs, Muslims, Baha'is and those of no organised Faith. There was great fellowship and warmth. The MP and mayor were present with their spouses. The comment was made that it was unfortunate that it took such a tragic event in India for us to come together physically and spiritually. Another comment was that some good can come out of such disasters, and this gathering was one small example of this."
- Opening The Terraces - the official press pack for the opening of the terraces on Mount Carmel on 22 May 2001
- http://www.bahaiworldnews.org - the official Baha'i World News website
- One of the many initiatives to help people to connect with their own spirituality, regardless of their personal beliefs or religion, are the Tranquillity Zones, iniated by Fidelma Meehan of the Swindon Baha'i community. They were recently featured in an article on This Is Wiltshire. Click here for the story.

- In the Coffee Break section of the Daily Mail on Monday, April 3rd, 2000 p.55, there is a letter from Brynley Fussell, in response to a question about what happened to him. He was a country boy who, in the Fifties, had a penchant for stealing aircraft and flying them all over the country. Just over half way through his reply, he mentions that, now retired, he takes his inspiration from the Baha'i Faith.
- BBC Radio Northampton broadcast an interview with Mazoud Habibi (recorded at the feast) on their Breakfast Show on Tuesday 21st March. They also broadcast an interview with Richard Leigh, Oliver Heath, Vicki Howarth and Fleur on Sunday 20th March about the Fast. They also played piece of Baha'i music to finish.
- BBC Look East ran a 2 - 3 minute article on Naw-Ruz on Tuesday 21st March. There were interviews with Baha'is from the Kettering feast (Minoo Jowshaghani and Mazoud Habibi), and footage of the Northamptonshire Baha'i Choir. It was broadcast at approximately 6:40pm on the "Close-up" section of the show.
- The Evening Telegraph printed a nice article on Naw Ruz in Friday's edition 17th March. The only mistake was a misprint in the headline "Baha'i". They also phoned up on Friday to ask several questions about the Faith and to arrange sending a photographer to Naw-Ruz.
- The Herald and Post also printed an article about Naw-Ruz on Thursday 9th March.
- Faiths unite for millennium service. This is due for re-broadcast on BBC1 in the very early hours of Monday 20th March.
